Red Flags When Hiring a Handyman in Ireland

Before you agree to a job, it is worth knowing the warning signs. A cheap quote or fast availability might seem appealing, but the wrong hire can lead to poor work, delays, extra costs, or even safety issues.
Here are the biggest red flags to watch out for when hiring a handyman in Ireland.
1. They cannot explain what is included in the quote
A trustworthy handyman should be able to clearly explain what the price covers. This includes labour, materials, call-out charges, VAT if applicable, and any possible extra costs.
Be cautious if the quote is vague, rushed, or only given verbally. Phrases like “we’ll sort it out later” or “don’t worry about the details” can lead to disputes once the job starts.
A good quote should make it clear what work will be done, how much it will cost, and what is not included.
2. They ask for full payment upfront
It is normal for some tradespeople to ask for a deposit, especially if materials need to be bought in advance. However, asking for the full amount before any work begins is a major warning sign.
For small handyman jobs, payment is often made once the work is complete. For larger jobs, staged payments may be agreed. Either way, you should never feel pressured to pay everything upfront.
A reliable handyman will be comfortable agreeing payment terms before the job starts.
3. They only accept cash and will not provide a receipt
Cash payments are not automatically a problem, but refusing to provide a receipt is. A receipt protects both you and the tradesperson by showing what was paid, when it was paid, and what the payment was for.
Be careful if someone insists on cash only, avoids paperwork, or says a receipt is not necessary. If something goes wrong later, it may be much harder to prove what was agreed.
4. They have no reviews, references, or online presence
Everyone has to start somewhere, but a complete lack of reviews, references, photos, or business details should make you pause.
Before hiring a handyman, look for signs that they have completed similar work before. This might include online reviews, before-and-after photos, customer testimonials, or a listing on a trusted trades directory.
The CCPC recommends researching tradespeople, checking reviews, asking for recommendations, and getting multiple quotes before making a decision.
5. They are poor at communicating
Poor communication before a job often leads to poor communication during the job.
Watch out for handymen who do not return calls, avoid answering direct questions, miss appointments, or give unclear start times. While everyone can be busy, basic communication is part of a professional service.
A reliable handyman should be able to confirm the job details, arrival time, price, and expected timeframe.
6. They pressure you to decide immediately
Be wary of anyone who pushes you to make a quick decision. Common pressure tactics include saying the price is only available “today”, claiming they have materials left over from another job, or suggesting the problem is urgent without explaining why.
A good handyman will give you time to consider the quote, compare options, and ask questions.
7. The quote is much cheaper than everyone else
A low price can be tempting, but if one quote is far cheaper than the others, ask why.
Sometimes it means materials are not included. Other times, it may suggest the handyman is uninsured, inexperienced, cutting corners, or underestimating the work involved.
Getting at least two or three quotes can help you understand the fair price for the job.
8. They say they can do electrical or gas work without registration
This is one of the most important red flags.
A general handyman should not be carrying out restricted electrical or gas work unless they are properly registered and qualified. In Ireland, electrical work in the home should be carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor, and Safe Electric advises homeowners to use a Registered Electrical Contractor and ask for a Completion Certificate after the work is finished.
Gas work should be carried out by a Registered Gas Installer. The Register of Gas Installers of Ireland explains that an RGI has gas safety qualifications, valid insurance, and an ID card with a valid date.
For jobs involving wiring, fuse boards, sockets, boilers, gas appliances, or gas pipework, hire the correct registered professional rather than a general handyman.
9. They cannot show proof of insurance
Accidents can happen, even on small jobs. Public liability insurance gives protection if property is damaged or someone is injured while work is being carried out.
If a handyman refuses to discuss insurance or says it is not needed, that is a concern. For simple, low-risk jobs this may feel less urgent, but for work involving ladders, tools, plumbing, fixtures, or rented property, insurance matters.
10. They are unwilling to put anything in writing
You do not always need a formal contract for a small repair, but you should still have the basics in writing. This can be as simple as a text message, email, or written quote confirming the job, price, date, and payment terms.
If someone refuses to put the agreement in writing, you may have little to rely on if the work is delayed, unfinished, or more expensive than expected.
11. They arrive without the right tools or materials
A professional handyman should arrive prepared for the job discussed. While unexpected issues can come up, turning up with no tools, no plan, or no understanding of the work is a bad sign.
This may suggest they have not listened properly, have limited experience, or are taking on work they are not equipped to complete.
12. They dismiss your concerns
A good handyman should be willing to answer reasonable questions. If you ask about materials, timing, safety, insurance, or previous work, they should not become defensive or dismissive.
You are hiring someone to work in your home. It is reasonable to expect professionalism, respect, and clear answers.
How to Hire a Handyman with Confidence
Before booking a handyman, take a few simple steps:
- Check reviews or references.
- Ask for a clear quote.
- Confirm what is included.
- Agree payment terms in advance.
- Avoid paying the full amount upfront.
- Get the basics in writing.
- Use registered professionals for electrical or gas work.
- Trust your instincts if something feels off.
A reliable handyman will not mind these checks. In fact, professional tradespeople usually welcome clear expectations because it protects everyone involved.
